From Goodreads:
A lush and gorgeously written debut, packed with action, intrigue, and a thrilling love triangle.

Alexa Hollen is a fighter. Forced to disguise herself as a boy and serve in the king's army, Alex uses her quick wit and fierce sword-fighting skills to earn a spot on the elite prince's guard. But when a powerful sorcerer sneaks into the palace in the dead of night, even Alex, who is virtually unbeatable, can't prevent him from abducting her, her fellow guard and friend Rylan, and Prince Damian, taking them through the treacherous wilds of the jungle and deep into enemy territory.

The longer Alex is held captive with both Rylan and the prince, the more she realizes that she is not the only one who has been keeping dangerous secrets. And suddenly, after her own secret is revealed, Alex finds herself confronted with two men vying for her heart: the safe and steady Rylan, who has always cared for her, and the dark, intriguing Damian. With hidden foes lurking around every corner, is Alex strong enough to save herself and the kingdom she's sworn to protect?

I haven't been a huge fan of High Fantasy/Epic Fantasy novels for long. I thought they were okay but they weren't the sort of thing that I would really look forward to. But then I read Sarah Maas' Throne of Glass series and this genre because an obsession for me. When I came across this book it just screamed out to me like the blurb of Throne of Glass had done to me also. That made Defy shoot right up on my 'dying-to-read' list. I seriously cannot wait to get my hands on it. It sounds like it has a Throne of Glass feel to it and I cannot wait to read it.

What do you think?

  1. It really does have a ToG vibe. And I didn't like fantasy either prior to reading Throne of Glass, but I think a lot of the newer fantasy titles are bringing exciting and very welcome changes to the genre.

  2. I love fantasy books! I prefer mine adult but they are still great for escapism.... This sounds good, I hadn't heard of it before so thanks for bringing it to my attention :)
