 MR Merrick

I am so excited to be participating in the blog tour for Shift, the second book in the phenomenal Protector Series by the amazing M.R. Merrick. I received the first book, Exiled for review last year and I was blown away by it, I loved every moment of it so I was so excited to read the second book.

My awesome co-blogger Lolita recently read the first book in the series, Exiled and she loved it. Of course she did, she has awesome taste in books!

Exiled (The Protector #1)
M.R. Merrick

Publication Date: August 28, 2011
Finish Date: January 14, 2012
Format: eBook

From Goodreads:
Chase Williams is a demon hunter in the Circle, or at least he was supposed to be. Failing to develop any elemental magic on his fifteenth birthday left him exiled in a world full of half-demons, and no hunters to protect him.

When Chase discovers the Circle's plan to unlock a portal and unleash pure-blood demons into the world, he vows to stop them. Knowing he can't do it alone however, he accepts help from Rayna, a sexy witch with an attitude and a secret.

As the pair attempt to stop the Circle, Chase realizes working with a demon is only half the battle. When they find themselves in the middle of the Circle's plan, it leaves one of them to decide what their friendship is worth, and the other's life depending on it.
I really liked this book. It deserves those 5 stars! This book has a good original story, lots of fantasy, a nice and a bit complicated world and very interesting and likeable characters. When I came across this book and read the blurb I immediately knew I wanted to read this book and thus immediately bought it. Also I really liked the cover, it is original and beautiful. The story is very original about a boy who is a demon hunter exiled from the circle of demon hunters when he doesn't develop elemental powers like the rest of the hunters. So now he is forced to live in a small shady house in a bad neighbourhood, while demons still try to kill him because of who and what he is.

The story immediately starts with an action scene, I always like books that start with action scenes. The beginning immediately pulled me into the story. I also liked that we find out about his exile in a flashback. Another point that captured my attention from the beginning was that the narrator is a male, which is something you don't come across often in this genre. I like this because it gives a slightly different view on things.

The story of this book is very good. It has that keep-reading feel. It also is a very fast-paced book. The book quickly introduces the world, demons in this book aren't your average demon but in fact everything that is supernatural, except the demon hunters, fall under the name demons. In the beginning this was a bit confusing, but I quickly got used to it. I really liked the world in this book, it was different from most other books, but still a bit the same. It has many common supernaturals and elements, but just a slightly different twist on it.

And then the characters. I really liked most of the characters, the were interesting and good characters. Lead character Chase is such a nice narrator. He has a bit of a temper and wants to solve anything with a fight, but he also has a soft side, which he doesn't display often. I really think this makes him a believable character. He makes some stupid mistakes, but he realises this himself and I think that makes him a really strong character. And then we have Chase's Mom, Marcus and Rayna. All three are great characters. They do display some characteristic personalities but are also original. So Marcus has that typical mysterious guy with many secrets. Chase's Mom is a typical mother figure but also has some real strength inside her. And Rayna was really my favourite character, everything about her made me like her. She is cute and feisty at the same time and there is so much mystery around her.

To conclude I really liked this book. It has such a good original story, with a very interesting world and interesting characters. And the ending left me with so many questions and no idea what will happen in Book 2. I am really looking forward to book 2. I mean if the author can wrote such a good first book, then how good must Book 2 be?

Review of Shift by Kayleigh

Shift (The Protector #2)
M.R. Merrick

Publication Date: February 1, 2012
Finish Date: January 22, 2012
Source: Review Copy from Matt
Format: eBook

From Goodreads:
Devastated by the loss of his mother, Chase is trying to balance the life he’s been left with, a family he’s still getting to know, and power he never thought he’d have. He doesn’t understand why the Goddess has named him the Protector and granted him two gifts: the Mark, a tattoo that now covers his back, and the ring. But between getting interrogated by the Circle and psychic attacks from Riley, the Mark is the least of his concern. There’s a demon inside Rayna that’s fighting to be released, and it’s not her inner witch. It’s something else–a monster threatening to tear her apart.

As Chase struggles to control his magic, his enemies are closing in. Everyone has staked a claim on his ring, and destroying it may be his only chance to stop Riley. But Chase must decide if stopping him is worth risking the lives of everyone he cares about, or if protecting the ring will be enough to save his world.
Wow! There are no words right now that could possibly explain how amazing this book is. It deserves way more than 5 stars.

Chase is caught in the midst of a supernatural war. Trying to come to terms with him magic he must find a way to stop his father from bringing back the evil God, Ithereal. But will he be able to stop such powerful magic when he can barely control his own?

When I received the first book from Matthew to review I instantly fell in love with his writing and his characters. It was without a doubt the best indie book I had ever read. I thought it no way could anything beat it. Well I was wrong. He definitely surpassed himself with Shift. It was absolutely incredible and I could not put it down. I finished Shift within a few days and it had me sat with bated breath wondering what was going to happen next. I did not see all the twists and turns coming and most of the time I was shocked at what was happening and I could not stop reading.

Matthew's writing technique is absolutely superb and his writing completely drew me in from the first page. It has been quite a while since I read Exiles and I couldn't remember everything that happened in it. What Matthew is great at is reminding the reader what happened in the previous book without it feeling repetitive and I find that a lot of authors in YA literature cannot do this very well. Matthew can, he is superb at it and within a couple of pages I remembered pretty much everything that had happened in the previous book and was completely gripped to the storyline and the events of what was happening in this book.

I absolutely love the characters in this book. Chase, our main character is just amazing. I love him. I love that this series is told from the point of view of a male character as a lot of YA literature is usually told from a female point of view so I find this very refreshing to read. I love Chase, I had completely forgotten how much I genuinely love this character and within one chapter I completely loved him again. I love that he's not perfect, he does make mistakes and learns from them. He just wants to do what is best for everyone around him and protect them and I love that about him. I felt that he had really grown as a character from where he was in Book 1 to where he is at the end of Book 2 and I loved seeing him progress and grow based on the things that happened to him.
I really loved seeing Chase's relationships with the other characters growing throughout this book. After his loss at the end of Book 1 I couldn't wait to see how he would deal with it and I loved seeing his relationship with Rayna growing. He and Rayna have gone through very similar things and I loved that they came together and trusted each other with everything.
Rayna is brilliant. I love her. She's the perfect strong kick-ass heroine and I loved seeing her more vulnerable side in this book. The thing I loved most about Chase's and Rayna's relationship in this book is that finally we got some romance. Hurray! I am definitely a romance girl and love romance in books and I love that it came into the later parts of this book. A lot of the time with books I feel like the romance starts too soon before the characters know each other. In this book it was perfect, how they went from strangers to friends to their feelings growing towards each other.

All in all this was the perfect book for me. I enjoyed it even more than the first one and I cannot wait for the next book in this series to see where the storyline goes. This is one of the series that I could just read again and again and never get bored of it. If you haven't read this series I would highly recommend it. This is not a series to be missed.

So that's our opinions on the series and from our reviews I think it's obvious we both adore Rayna. So now we have a very special treat for you guys, it's an interview with our favourite character, the amazing strong-willed kick-ass heroine of this amazing series

Hi Rayna and welcome to K-Books

What did you first think of Chase when you met him?

I thought he was a jerk. I’d heard he was cocky and I knew about his past so I expected him to be a little rough around the edges, but I didn’t think I’d have to punch him in the face. At least not the first time we met.

Looking back did you ever think you guys would have such a great friendship as you do now?

When Marcus told me he wanted to approach Chase, I had hoped we’d get along. We didn’t hope to meet him like we did, and even after our less than stellar introductions, I kept high hopes. But after that first meeting, I definitely didn’t expect us to connect like we did. I think a part of that might have been the circumstances of our situation. We had no choice but to trust each other. For a little while, we were all each other had.

How did you first meet Marcus? What did you think of him when you first met?

Marcus knew my mother long before I was born. He’s always been a part of my life, but he became really involved about a year before…well, when I was about eight.

You live in a society full of demons, how does it feel to be a half-demon?

Would be great if I was ‘just’ a half demon. Most of the Underworld doesn’t know I’m half hunter too, but they know something’s not right. It has always put me on the outside looking in; like I don’t belong. I guess part of that’s my fault. Hunting some of them has made me the enemy.

Do you feel like you have to prove yourself, being surrounded by full blood demons?

I used to feel like an abomination. That was until I saw what an actual pure-blood looks like. After fighting some of those, I think I fit in pretty good.

What do you think your greatest strengths are?

I think it’s that I don’t ever give up. No matter what come at me, I know I’ll persevere.

And your weaknesses?

Probably that I don’t know ‘when’ to give up. :)

What do you fear the most?

My mother died to save my life. I guess my biggest fear is that her death will be in vain.

Lastly, are there any sneak peaks you can tell us about what we can expect to come in your and Chase's story?

I wish I knew…there’s so much that isn’t clear right now. With Riley, the Dark Brothers, even me…I have no idea what lies ahead

Isn't she awesome?
So You wanna read the series right?
